Washer Will Not Start? How to Find the Cause

washer will not start

When a washer will not start, the machine stays dead when you press start. Usually, the lid or door switch, the start switch, or the control board is at fault. First, confirm the washer has power. Then, work through the start components below.

Safety first. Always unplug the washer before you open it. In addition, shut off the water supply before you touch a hose, valve, or pump.

Parts to inspect for a washer that will not start

1. Lid Switch & Actuator

The lid switch and its actuator confirm the lid is shut before the cycle runs. When either part breaks, the washer will not start. So check that the actuator presses the switch and test the switch for continuity. Replace the failed part to restore start.

2. Door Switch & Strike

The door switch senses that the door is closed, and the strike trips it. When the switch fails, the washer stays dead even with the door shut. So test the switch for continuity as the strike engages. Replace the switch if it does not close the circuit.

3. Start Switch & Timer

The start switch and timer begin the cycle and step it along. When either fails, the washer will not start or stalls mid-cycle. Therefore, test the switch and confirm the timer advances. Replace the failed part to restore the cycle.

4. Knobs

The control knobs set the cycle and select options on the timer or switches. When a knob cracks or its shaft strips, the control will not turn and the cycle will not start. So check that each knob grips and turns the shaft. Replace a knob that spins freely or is broken.

5. Drive Motor

The drive motor powers agitation and spin. When a winding fails or the motor overheats, it may hum, trip, or stop. Therefore, check that the shaft turns freely and test the windings. Replace the motor if it is open or seized.

6. Main Control Board

The main control board runs the cycle and powers the motor, valves, and pump. When it fails, the washer may be dead or skip steps. Therefore, inspect the board for burnt spots and confirm it powers each output. Replace the board if it no longer responds.

Most of the time, a washer that will not start traces back to one worn part. So replace it, then run a short cycle and confirm the fix.
