When a dryer door will not close or latch, the door switch never trips and the dryer will not run. Usually, a worn latch, a bent strike, or a loose hinge is the cause. So check the latch and strike first. Then, inspect the hinge and door switch below.
The door latch holds the dryer door shut during a cycle. When it wears or breaks, the door pops open and the dryer stops. Therefore, check that the latch catches firmly and lines up with the strike. Replace the latch if it no longer holds the door closed.
The door strike is the catch on the frame that the latch grabs. When it wears or bends, the door will not stay shut. So check the strike for wear and correct alignment. Replace the strike if the latch slips off it or the door drifts open.
The door hinge holds the door square so it seals and latches. When it loosens or bends, the door sags and misses the strike. Therefore, check the hinge screws and that the door lines up. Tighten or replace the hinge so the door closes flush.
The door switch tells the control the door is closed so the dryer can run. When it fails, the dryer will not start even with the door shut. Therefore, test the switch for continuity as the door closes and listen for its click. Replace the switch if it does not make contact.

Is the unit old or failing often? A new ENERGY STAR certified dryer can cut energy use, so weigh a repair against a replacement.
Most of the time, a dryer door that will not close traces back to one worn part. So replace it, then run a short cycle and confirm the fix.
