Dryer Stops Mid-Cycle? How to Find the Cause

dryer stops mid cycle

When a dryer stops mid-cycle, it shuts off before the clothes are dry. Usually, an overheating vent trips the thermal fuse, or a worn door switch or motor cuts out. So clear the vent and check the door switch first. Then, test the fuse, thermostat, and motor below.

Safety first. Always unplug the dryer before you open it. On a gas dryer, also shut off the gas supply before you touch the burner. In addition, clean the lint screen and vent regularly, because lint buildup is a fire risk.

Parts to inspect for a dryer that stops mid-cycle

1. Thermal Fuse

The thermal fuse cuts power if the dryer overheats, usually from a blocked vent. When it blows, the dryer may go dead or run without heat. Therefore, test the fuse for continuity and clear the vent that tripped it. Replace the fuse, but always fix the airflow first, or the new one will blow too.

2. Door Switch

The door switch tells the control the door is closed so the dryer can run. When it fails, the dryer will not start even with the door shut. Therefore, test the switch for continuity as the door closes and listen for its click. Replace the switch if it does not make contact.

3. Cycling Thermostat

The cycling thermostat turns the heat on and off to hold the drum at the set temperature. When it sticks, the dryer runs cold, stays too hot, or dries unevenly. Therefore, test the thermostat for continuity and correct switching. Replace it if it does not open and close at temperature.

4. Drive Motor

The drive motor turns the drum and runs the blower. When a winding fails or the bearings seize, the dryer hums, trips, or stays silent. Therefore, check that the motor shaft turns freely and test the windings. Replace the motor if it is open, seized, or will not restart when hot.

5. Moisture Sensor

The moisture sensor reads how wet the clothes are so an auto cycle knows when to stop. When it is coated or failed, the dryer stops early or runs too long. So wipe the metal sensor bars clean and test the sensor. Replace it if the auto cycle still misjudges the load.

6. Main Control Board

The main control board runs the electronic dryer and powers the motor, heater, and sensors. When it fails, the dryer may be dead, skip steps, or ignore the buttons. Therefore, inspect the board for burnt spots and confirm it powers each output. Replace the board if it no longer responds.

Is the unit old or failing often? A new ENERGY STAR certified dryer can cut energy use, so weigh a repair against a replacement.

Most of the time, a dryer that stops mid-cycle traces back to one worn part. So replace it, then run a short cycle and confirm the fix.
