The door latch holds the door shut and tells the control the door is closed. If it fails, the cycle will not run. First, inspect the latch and catch for wear or misalignment. Then test the switch for continuity and replace it if it fails.
Testing the latch takes only a few minutes. First, disconnect power at the breaker or the plug. Then, open the door and remove the inner door panel to reach the latch. Next, set a multimeter to continuity and place the probes on the switch terminals. With the door open, you should read no continuity. When you press the latch closed, the reading should change. If it does not, the switch has failed and needs a new latch assembly.
Sometimes the latch works but the door catch is out of line. In that case, the door will not seat and the cycle will not start. So check the catch first and adjust it if it is loose. Often, a small adjustment restores a firm close and saves a part.
A few signs point straight to the latch. For example, the door pops open mid-cycle, the buttons do nothing, or the door feels loose when shut. In each case, inspect the latch and switch before you look elsewhere.
