Refrigerator Not Making Ice? How to Find the Cause
When a refrigerator is not making ice, the water supply or the ice maker is usually to blame. First, confirm water reaches the unit. Then, work through the fill tube, valve, and ice maker step by step. Below, we list the parts to check.
Parts to inspect for a refrigerator not making ice problem
1. Water Fill Tubes
The fill tube carries water to the ice maker mold. In a cold freezer, a slow leak can freeze and block the tube. So inspect the tube for an ice plug and thaw it to confirm. Then correct the water pressure or valve so it does not refreeze.
2. Water Inlet Valve
The water inlet valve opens to feed water to the ice maker and the dispenser. When it clogs or fails, you get little or no water and often no ice. Therefore, check the valve screen for scale and test the coil for continuity. Replace the valve if it is blocked or electrically dead.
3. Ice & Water Filter
The water filter cleans the supply feeding the ice maker and dispenser. When it clogs, flow drops and ice production falls. So replace the filter on schedule, usually every six months. In addition, flush the new filter before you judge the flow.
4. Ice Maker Assembly & Replacement Ice Maker
The ice maker assembly runs the whole fill, freeze, and eject cycle. When internal parts fail, replacing the module is often the fix. Therefore, confirm water reaches the mold, then check the module for a stalled cycle. Replace the assembly if it will not cycle.
