Washer Will Not Spin? How to Find the Cause

washer will not spin

When a washer will not spin, wet clothes are left heavy at the end of the cycle. Usually, the lid switch, the motor coupling, or a worn belt is at fault. First, confirm the lid or door latches. Then, work through the drive parts below.

Safety first. Always unplug the washer before you open it. In addition, shut off the water supply before you touch a hose, valve, or pump.

Parts to inspect for a washer that will not spin

1. Direct Drive Motor Coupling

The motor coupling connects the motor to the transmission on direct-drive washers. When it wears, the motor runs but the tub will not agitate or spin. Therefore, remove the motor and check the coupling for cracked or stripped drive lugs. Replace the coupling if it is worn.

2. Door Lock & Interlock

The door lock and interlock keep a front-load door shut and tell the control it is safe to run. When the lock fails, the washer will not spin or start. Therefore, test the lock for continuity and confirm it latches. Replace the assembly if it does not lock or signal.

3. Wax Motor

The wax motor is a small actuator that locks a front-load door. When it fails, the door will not lock and the washer will not spin. So test the wax motor for continuity. Replace it if it does not actuate.

4. Lid Switch

The lid switch tells the control the lid is closed so the washer can spin. When it fails, the washer fills and agitates but will not spin or drain. Therefore, test the switch for continuity as the lid closes. Replace it if it does not click or make contact.

5. Clutch Assembly

The clutch lets the tub come up to spin speed gradually. When the clutch lining wears, the tub spins slowly or not at all and may smell hot. So inspect the clutch lining for wear and burn marks. Replace the clutch assembly if the lining is worn.

6. Drive Belt or Spin Belt

This belt drives the tub during the spin cycle. When it slips or breaks, the tub will not reach spin speed. So inspect the belt for glazing, cracks, and slack. Replace the belt if it is worn or loose.

Most of the time, a washer that will not spin traces back to one worn part. So replace it, then run a short cycle and confirm the fix.
