Electric Stove Burner Not Heating? Causes, Checks, and Parts to Replace

electric stove burner not heating

When an electric stove burner is not heating, one burner stays cold while the rest of the range works. Usually, a failed surface element, a burned receptacle, or a bad infinite switch is the cause. First, swap the element with a good one to test it. Then, check the receptacle and switch below.

Safety first. Turn off power to the range at the breaker before you open it. An electric range runs on 240 volts. On a gas range, also shut off the gas supply before you reach the burner, igniter, or valve. After a self clean cycle, let the oven cool fully before you start.

Parts to inspect for an electric stove burner not heating

1. Surface Burner Element

The surface burner element is the coil that heats a pot on an electric cooktop. When it burns out or breaks, that burner stays cold while the others still work. Therefore, swap the element with one from a good burner of the same size to test it. If the burner then heats, the original element is bad, so replace it.

2. Surface Burner Terminal Block & Receptacle

The terminal block is the socket that the plug-in element pushes into. When it burns or corrodes, the element loses contact and will not heat evenly. So pull the element and inspect the receptacle for scorch marks and loose metal. Replace a burned block, because a bad connection can arc and overheat.

3. Infinite Switch

The infinite switch sets how much power reaches a surface element, so it controls the heat level. When it fails, the burner stays off, stays full on, or will not adjust. Therefore, test the switch for continuity as you turn the knob. Replace the infinite switch if it does not send power at the right settings.

Swap the element to test it first

Before you order parts, run a quick swap test. First, let the cooktop cool. Then pull the element that will not heat, plus a working element of the same size. Next, plug the good element into the bad position and try it. Because this shows at once whether the element or the socket is at fault, it saves you from guessing.

Most of the time, an electric stove burner that is not heating traces back to one worn part. So replace it, then run a short test and confirm the fix.
