Dryer Has No Airflow? Restore the Exhaust

dryer no airflow

When a dryer has weak or no airflow, damp air stays in the drum and clothes take forever to dry. Usually, a clogged lint screen, a packed blower, or a blocked vent is the cause. So clean the lint screen and vent first. Then, check the blower wheel and housing below.

Safety first. Always unplug the dryer before you open it. On a gas dryer, also shut off the gas supply before you touch the burner. In addition, clean the lint screen and vent regularly, because lint buildup is a fire risk.

Parts to inspect for a dryer with weak or no airflow

1. Lint Screen & Filter

The lint screen traps lint so it does not clog the vent and choke airflow. When it stays dirty or the housing packs with lint, drying slows and heat builds. Therefore, clean the screen every load and clear the lint from the slot below it. Replace a torn screen so lint does not pass into the blower.

Unplug the dryer before you reach this part.

2. Blower Wheel

The blower wheel pulls air through the drum and pushes it out the vent. When it cracks, clogs, or loosens on the shaft, airflow drops and drying slows. Therefore, check the wheel for lint, cracks, and a tight fit. Clean or replace the blower wheel if it is damaged or wobbles.

Unplug the dryer before you reach this part.

3. Vent Duct & Exhaust

The vent duct carries hot, damp air out of the dryer to the outside. When it kinks, crushes, or fills with lint, clothes stay wet and the dryer overheats. So disconnect the duct and clear it end to end, then check the outside flap opens. Replace a crushed or leaking duct to restore airflow.

4. Blower Housing

The blower housing channels air from the drum to the vent around the blower wheel. When lint packs the housing, airflow drops and drying slows. So open the housing and clear the lint that collects inside. Replace the housing if it is cracked or lets air leak.

Clear the lint path end to end

Before you open the cabinet, clear the whole air path. First, clean the lint screen and the slot it sits in. Then, pull the duct off the back and vacuum it out to the wall, and check the outdoor vent hood for lint or a stuck flap. Because lint builds up over time, this step restores airflow on most dryers.

Is the unit old or failing often? A new ENERGY STAR certified dryer can cut energy use, so weigh a repair against a replacement.

Most of the time, a dryer with weak or no airflow traces back to one worn part. So replace it, then run a short cycle and confirm the fix.
