Dryer Making a Loud Noise? Common Causes and Fixes

dryer making loud noise

A dryer making a loud noise usually points to worn rollers, a bad pulley, or a failing bearing. A rumble, squeal, or thump often means a moving part has worn out. Therefore, locate the sound first, then inspect that part. Below, we list the parts to check.

Safety first. Always unplug the dryer before you open it. On a gas dryer, also shut off the gas supply before you touch the burner. In addition, clean the lint screen and vent regularly, because lint buildup is a fire risk.

Parts to inspect for a noisy dryer

1. Drum Rollers

The drum support rollers carry the drum so it turns smoothly. When they wear flat or their shafts dry out, the dryer rumbles and the drum drags. So spin each roller and check for flat spots and grinding. Replace the rollers as a set, since they wear together.

2. Idler Pulley

The idler pulley keeps tension on the drive belt so it grips the drum. When its bearing wears, you hear a squeal or thump and the belt may slip. Therefore, spin the pulley and feel for roughness or wobble. Replace the idler pulley if it is noisy or no longer holds tension.

3. Drive Belt

The drive belt wraps the drum and the motor pulley to turn the drum. When it stretches, frays, or snaps, the motor runs but the drum stays still. So open the cabinet and check the belt for cracks and a tight loop. Replace the belt if it is worn, glazed, or broken.

4. Blower Wheel

The blower wheel pulls air through the drum and pushes it out the vent. When it cracks, clogs, or loosens on the shaft, airflow drops and drying slows. Therefore, check the wheel for lint, cracks, and a tight fit. Clean or replace the blower wheel if it is damaged or wobbles.

5. Drum Bearing

The rear drum bearing supports the back of the drum as it turns. When it wears, the dryer grinds or squeals and the drum may drag. Therefore, turn the drum by hand and feel for roughness at the rear. Replace the bearing kit if it is worn or noisy.

6. Drum Glides & Slides

The glides and slides let the front of the drum ride quietly against the bulkhead. When they wear thin, you hear a scraping or ticking noise during a cycle. So inspect the glides for wear and grooves. Replace the glides as a set to quiet the drum.

7. Baffles

The baffles, or lifters, are the ribs inside the drum that tumble the clothes. When one cracks or loosens, you hear a thump and clothes catch on the broken edge. Therefore, check each baffle for cracks and a tight mount. Replace a cracked baffle to stop the noise and protect the load.

Is the unit old or failing often? A new ENERGY STAR certified dryer can cut energy use, so weigh a repair against a replacement.

Most of the time, a noisy dryer traces back to one worn part. So replace it, then run a short cycle and confirm the fix.
