Dryer Not Tumbling? Why the Drum Will Not Turn

dryer drum not turning

When a dryer is not tumbling, the motor may hum but the drum stays still. Usually, a broken drive belt, a worn idler pulley, or a failed motor is the cause. So open the cabinet and check the belt first. Then, inspect the pulley, rollers, and motor below.

Safety first. Always unplug the dryer before you open it. On a gas dryer, also shut off the gas supply before you touch the burner. In addition, clean the lint screen and vent regularly, because lint buildup is a fire risk.

Parts to inspect for a dryer that will not tumble

1. Drive Belt

The drive belt wraps the drum and the motor pulley to turn the drum. When it stretches, frays, or snaps, the motor runs but the drum stays still. So open the cabinet and check the belt for cracks and a tight loop. Replace the belt if it is worn, glazed, or broken.

2. Idler Pulley

The idler pulley keeps tension on the drive belt so it grips the drum. When its bearing wears, you hear a squeal or thump and the belt may slip. Therefore, spin the pulley and feel for roughness or wobble. Replace the idler pulley if it is noisy or no longer holds tension.

3. Drive Motor

The drive motor turns the drum and runs the blower. When a winding fails or the bearings seize, the dryer hums, trips, or stays silent. Therefore, check that the motor shaft turns freely and test the windings. Replace the motor if it is open, seized, or will not restart when hot.

4. Drum Rollers

The drum support rollers carry the drum so it turns smoothly. When they wear flat or their shafts dry out, the dryer rumbles and the drum drags. So spin each roller and check for flat spots and grinding. Replace the rollers as a set, since they wear together.

5. Belt Switch

The belt switch stops the dryer if the drive belt breaks, so the motor is not left spinning. When it sticks open or the belt snaps, the dryer will not start. So check the belt and test the switch for continuity. Replace a broken belt and a failed switch to restore start.

Is the unit old or failing often? A new ENERGY STAR certified dryer can cut energy use, so weigh a repair against a replacement.

Most of the time, a dryer that will not tumble traces back to one worn part. So replace it, then run a short cycle and confirm the fix.
