A clean refrigerator water filter protects taste, odor and flow — and replacing it is one of the easiest jobs you can do yourself, usually with no tools. When to replace it
- Most filters: every 6 months or about 200–300 gallons.
- Sooner if you notice slower water or ice, an off taste or smell, cloudy water, or the filter-status light comes on.
Before you start
- No tools needed for most models.
- You usually don’t need to shut off the water supply — the valve seals when the filter is removed — but keep a towel handy.
- Have your new genuine OEM filter ready, matched by part number to your model.
How to replace it — the general steps
- Locate the filter (interior upper-right, the base grille, or an air-vent area).
- Release it: twist a quarter-turn, or press the release button.
- Pull out and discard the old cartridge.
- Insert the new filter and twist/click it into place.
- Flush 2–4 gallons through the dispenser to clear carbon fines and air.
- Reset the filter-status indicator.

Filter location and the release mechanism vary by brand — pick yours:
SSamsung
Most Samsung filters sit inside the fridge in the upper-right corner (sometimes behind a small flap). Twist the cartridge a quarter-turn counter-clockwise and pull it straight out, then push the new one in and twist clockwise until it locks. Common parts: DA29-00020B (HAF-CIN) and DA29-00003G (HAF-CU1). Reset by holding the Ice/Water or Filter Reset button for about 3 seconds, then run roughly 1 gallon through the dispenser.
LLG
LG filters (LT700P, LT1000P) are usually inside, upper-right. Pull the cover door down or twist the cartridge a quarter-turn to release it; insert the new filter and lock it in place. Hold the dispenser’s filter button for 3–5 seconds to reset, and flush about 2.5 gallons.
WWhirlpool / EveryDrop
It depends on the model: base-grille filters use a push-button eject, while interior filters twist a quarter-turn. EveryDrop part numbers run EDR1–EDR4 — e.g. EDR1RXD1 (Filter 1). Hold the dispenser filter pad ~3 seconds to reset and flush 3–4 cups.
GGE
GE filters (XWF, XWFE, RPWFE, MWF) sit inside at the upper-right rear. Twist a quarter-turn counter-clockwise and pull out; push the new one in and twist to lock. RPWFE models need the RFID tag intact to work. Reset on the dispenser and flush ~2 gallons.
FFrigidaire
Frigidaire uses PureSource filters. PureSource 2/3 push in and out with a release button; PureSource Ultra/Ultra II twist a quarter-turn. Some older models hide the filter in the upper-right air grille. Reset the filter light on the control panel after flushing.
BBosch
Bosch UltraClarity filters are at the top-right rear inside the fridge. Twist the cartridge about 90° and pull down to release; insert the new filter and twist to lock. Run ~1 gallon and reset the filter indicator in the settings menu.
MMaytag
Maytag shares the Whirlpool filter family — UKF8001 / EDR4RXD1 (Filter 4) interior cartridges and base-grille push-button filters. Quarter-turn or press to release, then flush and reset the indicator.
KKitchenAid
KitchenAid also uses the Whirlpool system: interior quarter-turn or base-grille push-button filters (EveryDrop EDR1–EDR4). Flush 3–4 cups and hold the filter button to reset the status light.
After you replace it
Flush thoroughly — the first water may look cloudy or grey from harmless carbon fines and air. Reset the status light so the next cycle is tracked. And stick with genuine OEM filters: counterfeits leak, fit poorly and filter less.
